How to permanently remove mold from closet without damage?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in my Jumeirah apartment has started smelling really damp, and I just found a bunch of black spots all over the back wall and my leather bags. We had that really humid week about a month ago and it hasn't really gone away since. What's the most effective way to get rid of this mold for good without ruining my stuff?

First, move all affected items out immediately to prevent further contamination. Leather goods need professional cleaning to salvage them. For the wall, a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 4 parts water) can be effective for surface cleaning. Test any cleaner on a small, hidden area first to ensure it doesn't damage the paint or material.

However, in Dubai's climate, this is almost always a symptom of a deeper humidity or condensation issue, not just a surface problem. The high ambient humidity, combined with cold walls from constant AC, creates perfect conditions for mold growth inside closets against exterior walls. Simply wiping the spots will not provide a permanent solution.

The most critical step is identifying and stopping the moisture source. This often requires a professional inspection to diagnose. It could be a minor gap in the building envelope letting in humid air, a condensation issue from the AC system, or even a small, hidden plumbing leak. Without addressing this root cause, the mold will return.

For a permanent fix, after the source is controlled, the affected drywall or plaster may need to be removed and replaced if the mold has penetrated deeply. For serious infestations, especially with a persistent damp smell, professional remediation is advised to ensure it's done safely and thoroughly, preventing spores from spreading to other parts of your apartment. Companies with their own microbiology labs can provide post-remediation verification testing to confirm the environment is truly dry and mold-free.
