How to prevent mold in built-in wardrobe long-term?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived in our Jumeirah villa for a few years, but this past winter I started finding patches of black mold in the back of the wardrobe in our master bedroom, especially on our leather bags and shoes. The room always feels a bit damp, and I’m constantly running the dehumidifier. I’ve cleaned it twice already but it keeps coming back within a couple of months. What’s the most effective long-term solution to prevent this mold from recurring in a built-in wardrobe?

Persistent wardrobe mold in a Jumeirah villa points to a consistent moisture source, often condensation from the room's AC unit or a hidden leak in the wall. Simply cleaning the visible mold doesn't address this underlying humidity, which is why it returns.

First, ensure the wardrobe isn't placed against an exterior wall where a difference between the chilled interior and the hot, humid outside creates a condensation point. If it is, consider adding a vapour barrier or insulating that wall. Check that the room's AC is correctly sized and functioning; an oversized unit cools the air too quickly without adequately dehumidifying it, leaving the room damp. Run the AC consistently, even when the room is unoccupied, to maintain stable temperature and humidity levels below 60%.

Improve air circulation within the wardrobe itself. Leave doors slightly ajar periodically and avoid over-packing clothes, which traps stagnant air. Desiccant boxes like silica gel can help, but they are a temporary measure for a small space, not a solution for a systemic issue.

For a problem that reoccurs after multiple cleanings, a professional inspection is advised to identify the precise moisture source. This may involve using a thermal camera to find cold spots causing condensation or a moisture meter to check walls for hidden dampness. In many cases, the most effective long-term solution is installing a dedicated, low-wattage ventilation system within the wardrobe cavity to constantly exhaust humid air.
