How to safely assess and remove hidden black mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind the clothes. It must have been there a while, and I'm worried it's from a hidden AC leak since that wall is always cold. What's the best way to get a professional to assess and remove this safely without it spreading spores everywhere?

Do not disturb the area. Black mold often indicates a hidden moisture source, and your suspicion of an AC leak is common here. The constant cold surface from the AC unit on that wall creates condensation in our high humidity, providing the perfect environment for mold.

For assessment, you need a professional inspection. A certified mold inspector will use a moisture meter to pinpoint the exact water source behind the wall and may recommend an air or surface sample sent to an accredited microbiology lab to identify the species. This is critical, as not all black mold is the highly toxic Stachybotrys, but proper identification determines the remediation protocol.

For safe removal, DIY is strongly discouraged for anything beyond a very small, surface-level patch. Professional remediation is essential for hidden mold to prevent spore dispersal. A reputable company will follow a strict containment process: sealing the area with plastic sheeting, running negative air pressure machines (HEPA-filtered air scrubbers) to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of your home, and then physically removing the contaminated materials. They will treat the area with antimicrobial solutions and finally verify the cleanup's effectiveness with post-remediation testing. Always request a detailed report with before-and-after lab results to confirm the job is complete.
