How to safely remove black mold from AC vent?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been making a weird damp smell for a couple of weeks, and now I’ve just found patches of black mold all around the vent in my master bedroom. With this humidity, it seems to be spreading fast. What’s the most effective way to get rid of this safely, and should I call a professional company or is it something I can handle myself with products from ACE?

Black mold around AC vents in Jumeirah Village Circle is common due to our high humidity and constant AC use, which creates condensation. For a small, visible patch (less than one square foot), you can attempt to clean it yourself. However, safety is the primary concern.

Wear an N95 mask, goggles, and gloves to avoid inhaling spores or skin contact. Isolate the area by closing the bedroom door and consider covering the doorway with plastic sheeting. Use a hydrogen peroxide-based cleaner or a diluted vinegar solution; avoid bleach as it only removes the color and can release harmful fumes. Scrub the visible mold from the vent and surrounding wall, allowing the solution to sit for several minutes to penetrate.

The critical issue is that the visible mold is often just the tip of the iceberg. The contamination is likely inside the ductwork and the AC unit's evaporator coil, which is the real source of the damp smell. DIY cleaning only addresses the surface and will not stop rapid regrowth from the internal reservoir.

For this reason, and because black mold (which could be Stachybotrys or other species) can cause significant health issues, a professional assessment is strongly recommended for a recurring problem. Professionals use containment barriers, HEPA filtration air scrubbers, and industrial-grade antimicrobials to treat the entire system, not just the vent. They can also identify and rectify the underlying moisture source, which is essential for a permanent solution. The Dubai climate makes this a systemic issue that usually requires a comprehensive approach.
