How to safely clean mold from toys and walls?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks and I’m getting worried. I finally pulled out their toy chest from the corner of their bedroom in our Jumeirah villa and found a bunch of their soft toys covered in black and green fuzzy spots. We had that minor leak from the upstairs bathroom a while back and I’m scared the moisture got into the walls. What’s the safest way to clean this up myself without risking my family's health?

Discard any soft toys with visible mold growth. The porous materials cannot be properly sanitized, and attempting to clean them will release a high concentration of spores into your home's air, which your children will inhale.

For hard, non-porous toys, clean them outside. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Use a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water. Vinegar is effective on many common molds in our humid climate. Scrub thoroughly, rinse with clean water, and let them dry completely in the sun.

The wall behind the chest is the primary concern. That black and green growth indicates sustained moisture, likely from the past leak. Surface cleaning with vinegar or a diluted bleach solution (1 cup bleach to 1 gallon of water) can remove the visible stain, but it will return if the wall itself is damp. The leak may have soaked the insulation or inner wall structure, creating a hidden reservoir of mold.

Given the children's persistent coughing, this indicates a significant airborne spore count. DIY cleaning often disturbs these spores, making the problem worse. The safest approach is a professional inspection. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the hidden dampness and can take an air quality sample to identify the mold species. This is critical, as some types common in Dubai villas due to AC use and condensation can be more problematic for respiratory health. Proper remediation involves containing the area, removing affected materials, and using HEPA filtration to clean the air.
