Is bedroom mold causing allergies and how to clean?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It wasn't there during the last cleaning, but with all the humidity lately, I guess it's sprung up. My husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose and itchy eyes for the past week. Could this mold in the bedroom be the cause of his allergies, and what's the safest way for us to clean it ourselves?

Yes, the mould in your bedroom closet is very likely causing your husband's allergy symptoms like stuffy nose and itchy eyes. In Dubai's climate, high humidity and condensation from constant AC use create ideal conditions for mould growth indoors, especially in poorly ventilated areas like closets.

For a small patch (less than one square meter), you can clean it yourself safely. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then wipe with a diluted bleach solution (one part bleach to ten parts water). Dry the surface completely with a fan afterwards—this last step is critical in our humidity. Fix the moisture source; it's often condensation from an AC duct or a leak. Improve air circulation in the closet and consider a dehumidifier.

If the mould covers a larger area, returns quickly after cleaning, or if anyone has asthma or a weakened immune system, do not attempt cleaning. The Dubai Municipality recommends certified professionals for larger infestations to prevent spore dispersal. A proper inspection can identify the exact mould type and moisture source, which is necessary for a permanent solution.
