Should we call a professional for black mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. It’s gotten worse since the weather turned more humid. My husband thinks we can just spray it with bleach ourselves, but I'm worried it's a bigger issue. Should we call a professional mold inspector for something like this, or is a DIY approach safe and effective?

Black mold in a closet on an interior wall, especially one that's growing, is a strong indicator of a hidden moisture problem. In Dubai's climate, where high outdoor humidity meets year-round AC use, condensation within wall cavities is common. This mold is a symptom; the real issue is the unseen water source promoting its growth.
A DIY bleach spray will only remove the surface discoloration you can see. It will not address the moisture source or the root structure of the mold growing within the wall. The problem will almost certainly return, often worse than before. For a recurring patch like this, a professional inspection is recommended. A certified inspector will use tools like moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to locate the source of the dampness—often a leaking AC condensate drain line, poor insulation causing condensation, or a minor plumbing leak from an adjacent bathroom. The goal is to diagnose the cause, not just treat the symptom. Once the moisture source is identified and repaired, the mold itself can be properly remediated. Without fixing the cause, any remediation is temporary. For a confirmed and contained issue, targeted professional cleaning may be sufficient. If the inspection reveals more extensive growth inside the wall, a full containment and removal protocol would be necessary to prevent spores from spreading to other home areas during the work. |
