How to treat bedroom mold and prevent it returning?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has been feeling really damp lately, and I just found a patch of black speckles in the corner behind our wardrobe. We run the AC constantly, but the room never feels properly dry, especially after our long showers. What’s the most effective way to treat this myself and what kind of dehumidifier should I get to stop it from coming back?

The black speckles are likely mould growth, a common issue in Dubai bedrooms due to high humidity from showers and the constant temperature differential between the cold AC air and warm walls, which causes condensation. The first step is to address the moisture source.
For a small patch (under one square meter), you can treat it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water or a diluted detergent, not bleach, as bleach only removes the colour and doesn't kill the roots. Scrub the area thoroughly, dry it completely, and dispose of any contaminated materials like cardboard. Move the wardrobe away from the wall to improve air circulation. To prevent recurrence, you must lower the room's humidity. A desiccant dehumidifier is more effective than a refrigerant model in Dubai's climate, as it works better in the cooler temperatures of an air-conditioned room. Look for a unit with a capacity rated for your bedroom's size and a built-in hygrometer to maintain humidity between 45-55%. Run it during and for at least 30 minutes after your showers. However, if the mould covers a larger area, has a musty odour, or returns quickly after cleaning, the moisture issue may be within the wall or AC system itself. In such cases, a professional inspection with moisture meters and lab testing is recommended to identify the exact species and the full extent of the problem, ensuring it is remediated correctly. |
