Is black mold in damp wall an urgent issue?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it feels a bit damp. With the humidity lately, I'm worried it's spreading quickly behind the walls. How urgent is it that I get a professional mold removal company in to deal with this, and is this something that can wait a few days?

Yes, this is an urgent issue that should be addressed within days, not weeks. The dampness you describe indicates an active moisture source, and Dubai's high humidity provides the ideal environment for mold to spread rapidly behind walls and into insulation.

The immediate health risk depends on the species, but any black mold in a living space can cause respiratory irritation, worsened allergies, and sinus congestion. For anyone with asthma or a weakened immune system, the risk is higher. The structural risk is also significant, as the mold is actively consuming the damp building materials.

Do not attempt to remove it yourself with bleach or other store-bought solutions. Disturbing it will release a large number of spores into your home's air. The critical first step is a professional inspection to identify the exact moisture source—it could be a leaking pipe, condensation from the AC duct, or capillary action from the outside wall—and to assess the full extent of the hidden growth. A proper remediation plan from a certified company will include containment of the area, HEPA filtration to capture spores, and safe removal of contaminated materials.

Until you can get an assessment, move the storage boxes away from the wall to improve air circulation, keep the bedroom door closed, and if possible, run a dehumidifier in the room. The urgency is high because the problem is actively worsening behind the surface.
