Should I test for mold or clean it myself?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop and getting headaches ever since the humidity spiked a few weeks ago, and I’m starting to worry. I noticed some black speckles forming in the corner of our master bedroom behind the wardrobe, which doesn’t get much air from the AC. We live in an older building in Bur Dubai. Is this something I should get professionally tested, or can I handle it myself with bleach?

Your children's symptoms combined with visible growth in a poorly ventilated corner strongly suggest a mold issue that warrants professional attention. The high humidity in Dubai creates ideal conditions for mold, especially in older buildings and in areas with low air circulation like behind furniture.

Cleaning visible mold with bleach is a temporary fix at best. Bleach only removes surface discoloration on non-porous materials but does not kill the root structure (hyphae) penetrating porous surfaces like drywall or wood. More critically, it does not address the hidden spores released into your air, which are the most likely cause of the persistent coughing and headaches.

For your situation, a professional inspection is recommended. They will identify the exact moisture source—often condensation from AC temperature differentials or a minor leak—and assess the full extent, including what may be growing inside your AC unit or behind walls. Crucially, they use air and surface sampling to identify the mold species. In the UAE, certain types like Aspergillus are commonly identified and can cause significant respiratory irritation. This scientific diagnosis is key to understanding the health risk and planning an effective remediation.

You can verify a reputable inspector by asking if they are IICRC-certified and if their assessment includes independent lab analysis of samples. This provides the concrete evidence needed to solve the problem correctly, not just mask it.
