How to remove black mold in humid Dubai bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Al Barsha for two years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the corner of our bedroom wall, right behind the headboard. It’s been really humid the last few weeks and the room constantly feels damp. What's the most effective way to get rid of this ourselves, or is this a job for a professional company here in Dubai?

That black spot pattern behind the headboard is a classic sign of condensation mould, very common in Dubai's humid climate. The wall is likely cold from the AC, and the headboard traps humid air against it, creating the perfect damp environment for mould to grow.
For a small area (under one square meter), you can tackle it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Move the headboard to allow the wall to dry completely. Mix a solution of one part distilled white vinegar with four parts water and scrub the area. Vinegar is effective against many common mould types here. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the colour and can worsen the problem by adding moisture. After cleaning, let the area dry thoroughly. To prevent it from returning, you must address the humidity and condensation. Keep the AC running to dehumidify the room, even when you're out. Ensure furniture is several inches away from walls to allow air circulation. A dehumidifier in the bedroom can make a significant difference. If the mould covers a larger area, has a musty odour, or returns quickly after cleaning, it's a job for a professional. The mould may have penetrated the wallboard or insulation, requiring more advanced remediation. In Dubai, reputable companies should follow international guidelines like the IICRC S520 and provide before-and-after testing from an accredited lab to verify the mould has been properly removed. Given your villa's age and the persistent damp feeling, an inspection could identify a underlying humidity issue that needs fixing. |
