How to treat mold on leather and prevent closet humidity?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has started to get small black spots on the leather bags and shoes we stored there. We’ve lived in this Marina apartment for two years and it’s the first time we’ve seen this, especially after the recent humidity. What’s the most effective way to treat the items already affected and what dehumidifier or moisture absorber do you recommend placing inside the closet to stop it from coming back?

First, move the affected leather items out of the closet immediately to prevent further spread. For cleaning, use a solution of equal parts distilled water and 70% isopropyl alcohol. Dampen a soft, white cloth (colored cloths can bleed dye), wring it out thoroughly, and gently wipe the mould off. Allow the items to air dry completely away from direct sunlight, which can damage the leather. For valuable items, consulting a professional leather restorer is advisable.
The root cause is high humidity trapped in an enclosed space, a common issue in Dubai, especially during the more humid months and in apartments with continuous AC use that creates temperature differentials. An interior wall closet with poor air circulation is a prime spot for condensation. For prevention, a compact electric dehumidifier is far more effective than passive moisture absorbers for the UAE's climate. Place a small mini-dehumidifier inside the closet; look for one with a capacity suitable for enclosed spaces up to 5 sqm and an auto-shutoff feature for when its tank is full. The key is to maintain relative humidity below 60%. Improving air circulation is also critical. Leave the closet doors slightly ajar periodically, and if possible, have your AC unit serviced to ensure it is effectively removing humidity from your apartment's air. In severe or recurring cases, the mould growth inside the wall itself may be the issue, which requires a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging to identify any hidden condensation or leaks. |
