Is bedroom mold causing our constant coughs?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and we can't figure out why. I finally pulled back the wardrobe in our master bedroom and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold covering the entire wall behind it, right where the AC vent is. We've lived in this Marina apartment for 2 years and just noticed this. Could this mold be the reason for our constant colds and sore throats, and is it dangerous?

Yes, the black mold behind your wardrobe is very likely causing the persistent coughs and sore throats. In Dubai's climate, this is a common issue, particularly in high-humidity areas like the Marina. The constant use of air conditioning creates significant condensation, especially on cold exterior walls where furniture is placed. This trapped moisture creates the perfect environment for mold to thrive.

The type of mold matters. While the term "black mold" often refers to Stachybotrys chartarum, which can produce mycotoxins, many other black-colored species are more common but still problematic. All molds release spores and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) into the air, which are direct irritants to the respiratory system. For children, whose airways are smaller and immune systems are still developing, this constant exposure frequently manifests as a chronic cough, congestion, and allergy-like symptoms that feel like a never-ending cold.

You need to address this immediately. Do not attempt to clean a large patch yourself, as disturbing it will release a massive amount of spores throughout your apartment. The first step is a professional inspection and air quality testing to identify the species and the spore concentration levels in your living space. This lab analysis is crucial to understand the specific health risk and to plan an effective remediation strategy, which must include fixing the source of the moisture—likely the AC condensation line or a lack of insulation on that cold wall. Reputable companies in Dubai will provide documented before-and-after test results to verify the environment has been returned to a safe standard.
