How to permanently stop mold in UAE closet?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa has started to get a faint damp smell, and I just found a few small black spots on a leather bag I stored in there. We run the AC constantly, but with the recent high humidity, I'm worried it's spreading. What's the most effective way to stop this mold from coming back for good—should I get a dehumidifier, or is there a specific type of anti-mold spray that works best in UAE homes?

Permanent mold prevention requires addressing the root cause: excess moisture. In Dubai's high humidity, even air-conditioned spaces can have elevated moisture levels, especially in enclosed, poorly ventilated areas like closets on exterior walls.
First, identify the moisture source. In villas, this is often condensation from an AC unit whose cold air supply is directly hitting the interior closet wall, or a small water leak from plumbing in adjacent walls. Move stored items away from the walls and inspect for dampness or condensation. Ensure the closet is not overcrowded, as air needs to circulate. A dehumidifier can help, but it treats the symptom, not the cause. For a closet, a smaller, renewable desiccant dehumidifier (like silica gel packs) is more practical than a large unit. The most effective step is to have an HVAC technician check that your AC's condensate drain line is clear and that the unit is properly dehumidifying the air as it cools; this is a common issue in UAE homes. For the existing mold, carefully clean the affected surfaces with a solution of diluted white vinegar or a detergent designed for mold removal. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the surface colour and does not kill the root structure on porous materials. The leather bag should be professionally cleaned to prevent spores from spreading. If the mold returns quickly or covers more than a small area (about one square foot), a professional inspection is recommended. They can use a moisture meter to pinpoint the exact source of water intrusion and take air or surface samples for lab analysis to identify the mold species, which dictates the proper remediation protocol. This diagnostic approach is the only way to achieve a long-term solution. |
