How to prevent mold in humid villa closet?« Back to Previous Page

My master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall in my Jumeirah Park villa, has started to get dark black spots on the leather bags and shoes I stored in there. It’s been incredibly humid the last few weeks and I think the lack of airflow is causing it. What’s the most effective way to prevent this mold from coming back every summer?

The most effective prevention combines moisture control and airflow. Your interior closet in Jumeirah Park is a classic mold risk zone due to Dubai's high humidity and the lack of air circulation from your AC.
First, address the humidity source. The air inside that closet is likely much more humid than the rest of your air-conditioned room. Install a battery-operated humidity meter (hygrometer); aim to keep it below 60%. For immediate reduction, use a compact, renewable desiccant dehumidifier like silica gel packs inside the closet. For a more permanent solution, a small electric dehumidifier designed for small spaces can be highly effective. Second, you must create airflow. An interior closet with a closed door becomes stagnant. Leave the closet door open for a few hours each day to allow your room's AC to circulate dry, conditioned air inside. If possible, install a louvered door to permit passive airflow or a small, quiet ductless fan to keep air moving. Before treating or storing anything, the existing mold must be professionally identified and remediated. Wiping visible spots from leather is not enough; microscopic spores will remain and regrow. A certified inspection can confirm the species and the full extent, which is crucial for effective remediation and preventing recurrence. For valuable items like leather goods, this lab identification step is advised to ensure the correct cleaning method is used. Long-term, consider applying a mold-resistant paint or coating to the closet's interior walls and ceiling after remediation, as these surfaces can harbor moisture. Store items in sealed plastic containers rather than cardboard boxes or directly on shelves, and ensure leather goods are perfectly clean and dry before returning them to the space. |
