Mold on clothes: professional cleaning or DIY?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be mold. I just pulled our winter clothes out of the storage cupboard in our Jumeirah villa and found a bunch of jackets and sweaters covered in black spots. The cupboard is on an exterior wall and it's felt damp since the heavy rains in March. Is this something I need to get professionally cleaned immediately, or can I handle it myself with a trip to ACE?

The black spots on your clothes are likely mold, a common issue in Dubai villas after periods of high humidity and rain, especially on exterior walls where condensation can form. Given the dampness you've felt since March, this indicates a persistent moisture problem that needs to be addressed at its source.
For the clothes themselves, you can attempt to clean them if the mold growth is light and only on the surface. Wash them with a mold-killing detergent; white vinegar or a diluted bleach solution (if the fabric allows) can be effective. Sun-drying them thoroughly in direct sunlight is crucial, as UV light helps kill mold spores. However, cleaning the clothes is only treating the symptom. The real concern is the damp storage cupboard. This is a breeding ground for mold, and the spores are now airborne, which is a likely contributor to your kids' coughing. Simply wiping the cupboard with a bleach solution is a temporary fix. The moisture is likely penetrating the wall or is due to condensation from the temperature difference between the air-conditioned interior and the hot, humid exterior. In this case, with a persistent damp issue and health symptoms already present, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can identify the moisture source—whether it's a leak, rising damp, or severe condensation—and prescribe the correct remediation method. This often involves addressing the wall's integrity, improving ventilation, and using industrial-grade equipment to properly dry the structure and remove all spores. Without fixing the root cause, the mold will return. |
