Mold found behind sofa; health risk and inspection needed??« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be mold. I just pulled back the sofa in our living room in Jumeirah and found a big patch of black and greenish mold on the wall behind it. We had a small leak from the AC unit a couple of months ago that we thought was fixed. What’s the best way to get a proper mold inspection done here, and should I be worried about my family’s health?

Mold growth behind furniture, especially after a known AC leak, is a serious indicator of a moisture problem that needs professional assessment. The black and greenish patches suggest multiple species may be present, some of which can produce irritants and allergens that cause coughing and respiratory issues, particularly in children.

In Dubai's high humidity, AC condensation leaks are a primary cause of hidden mold. The wall cavity behind that sofa likely remained damp long after the surface was wiped dry, creating an ideal environment for growth. A proper inspection is not just a visual check; it involves moisture mapping with thermal imaging or moisture meters to find the full extent of the water damage and air or surface sampling to identify the mold types for an accurate health risk assessment.

You should contact a company with certified mold inspectors and its own microbiology lab. This is critical because they can provide documented, verifiable evidence of the species present and the spore concentration in your air, which is what determines the health risk to your family. The Dubai Municipality has guidelines on indoor air quality, and a professional report will align with these standards, giving you a clear action plan for remediation. Do not attempt to disturb the area yourself, as this can release a large number of spores into your living space. Keep the sofa pulled away and the area ventilated until a professional can assess it.
