Best product to kill and prevent shower mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading in the grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower. It's worse in the corners and seems to be growing. I run the exhaust fan during and after showers, but our bathroom doesn't have a window. What's the most effective product I can buy locally to kill this mold and stop it from coming back?

Black mold in shower grout is extremely common in Dubai due to the high humidity and lack of ventilation in many windowless bathrooms. While exhaust fans help, they often can't remove moisture fast enough to prevent condensation in grout lines.

For a DIY approach, the most effective locally available product is a chlorine-based mold and mildew remover. Look for a thick, gel-based formula from brands like HG, Cif, or Dettol that can cling to vertical surfaces and grout. Apply it heavily to the affected areas, let it sit for the recommended time (usually 15-20 minutes), then scrub with a stiff brush. Always ensure the bathroom is well-ventilated during use.

To prevent regrowth, the key is moisture control. Wipe down shower walls and squeegee excess water after every use. This single habit is more effective than any product. Consider running a small dehumidifier in the bathroom for an hour after showering. For persistent cases, regrouting with a high-quality, mold-resistant grout may be necessary, as the fungus can penetrate deep into porous materials.

If the mold returns quickly despite these measures, or if it covers a large area (more than one square meter), the issue may be deeper within the wall or related to a hidden leak. In such cases, a professional inspection can identify the root cause, which is essential for a long-term solution.
