Is mold causing my kids' cough? Need urgent inspection?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing a lot lately and I’m worried it’s from mold. I’ve just noticed a few small black spots starting to form in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on the outside wall of our villa in Jumeirah. It’s been so humid the last few weeks that the walls almost feel damp. Is this something I need to get inspected immediately, or can it wait until the weekend?

Given Dubai's high humidity and your villa's location in Jumeirah, damp exterior walls are a common pathway for mold growth. The black spots in your closet and the recent humidity are strong indicators of a moisture issue, which can absolutely cause or worsen respiratory irritation and coughing in children.
You should treat this with urgency, but not necessarily panic. Mold spores from that location are likely circulating in your home's air, especially if the AC system is drawing air from that area. For children, whose respiratory systems are more sensitive, this exposure often manifests as a persistent cough or worsened allergies. Arrange a professional inspection. In the UAE, a proper inspection involves more than a visual check; it should include moisture mapping of the wall cavity and air sampling to identify spore types and concentrations. This is critical because the visible spot is often just the tip of the iceberg—the main colony can be hidden inside the wall where condensation forms on cool AC-chilled surfaces. Until the inspection, keep the closet door closed and the room well-ventilated. Do not attempt to clean or disturb the spots yourself, as this can release a large number of spores. A certified inspector can pinpoint the moisture source (often a minor leak or insulation failure) and provide a remediation plan that addresses the root cause, not just the visible growth. |
