Is bedroom closet mold urgent and spreading inside walls?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, speckled mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and it appeared after that period of heavy dew we had last month. My wife has been waking up with a stuffy nose and headaches. How urgent is it that we get this professionally treated, and could it be spreading inside the wall?

Based on your description, this situation warrants prompt professional attention. The location on an exterior wall, its appearance after a period of heavy condensation, and the associated health symptoms all point to a likely moisture issue that needs to be diagnosed.

The black, speckled appearance suggests it could be a common mould like Cladosporium, which thrives in the high humidity and condensation cycles typical in Dubai, especially on cooler exterior walls. The fact that it appeared after a heavy dew event strongly indicates a persistent dampness problem within that wall cavity. It is very possible the mould is spreading inside the wall, as the visible patch is often just the surface manifestation of a larger colony.

Your wife's stuffy nose and headaches are common reactions to mould exposure and indicate the spores are becoming airborne, likely through the AC system. This is not something to ignore.

For a case like this, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They will use a borescope to check inside the wall and conduct air quality tests to determine spore levels in the room and if the HVAC system is contaminated. DIY cleaning is not advised as it can disturb a larger colony and exacerbate the problem. The root cause—the moisture intrusion—must be identified and resolved first, which often requires a building envelope assessment. After remediation, a post-clearance test from an independent lab is the only way to verify the environment is safe again.
