AC mold behind unit dangerous for my toddler?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah seems to be leaking a bit of water onto the wall behind the unit, and now I’m seeing a bunch of black spots spreading there. It’s been getting worse since the weather got more humid a couple of weeks ago. I’m worried about my toddler breathing it in, but I’m not sure if this is something I can just clean with bleach myself or if I need to call a professional company to handle it properly?

Yes, this situation warrants immediate attention, especially with a toddler. The black spots are almost certainly mold, and its rapid spread is a direct result of the AC condensate leak providing constant moisture, exacerbated by Dubai's high humidity.

While not all molds are highly toxic, the constant presence of spores from this growth can irritate a toddler's developing respiratory system, potentially worsening or triggering allergies, asthma, and causing persistent cold-like symptoms. The risk is higher in confined spaces like bedrooms.

Do not use bleach. It is mostly water and can feed the mold roots deep in the porous wall material, and its fumes are hazardous to inhale. For a proper remediation, the AC leak must be fixed first—this is the root cause. A professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the extent of the hidden damage inside the wall cavity and to safely remove the contaminated materials. Reputable providers in Dubai should use containment, HEPA filtration, and provide verification that the area is returned to a safe, normal fungal ecology through post-remediation testing.
