How to permanently stop mold behind bedroom wall?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom of our villa in Jumeirah has started showing these black speckles. It's been getting worse since the humidity spiked a couple of weeks ago, and I'm worried it's spreading where we can't see it. We had a company come and clean it last year, but it's clearly come back. What is the most effective long-term solution to stop this mold from returning every winter?

The recurring mold behind your wardrobe is a classic Dubai issue caused by a combination of high humidity and cold spots created by year-round AC use. The wall is likely an exterior wall that gets cold from the AC, and the trapped, stagnant air behind the furniture allows condensation to form, creating a perfect breeding ground. Simply cleaning the visible mold is a temporary fix if the moisture source isn't addressed.

For a permanent solution, you need a professional inspection to identify the exact moisture source. It could be a minor, hidden plumbing leak, condensation from a poorly insulated exterior wall, or even humidity migrating from your ensuite bathroom. The inspector should use a moisture meter to pinpoint the problem area behind the wall itself. The remediation must then follow a strict protocol: not just wiping the surface, but properly removing the contaminated materials if necessary, HEPA vacuuming the area, and applying an antimicrobial coating to prevent regrowth.

Crucially, you must then control the environment to prevent its return. This involves ensuring excellent air circulation behind the wardrobe—even placing a small gap between the furniture and the wall helps. A standalone dehumidifier in the room during the humid winter months can make a significant difference by keeping relative humidity below 60%. For serious, persistent cases on exterior walls, improving the wall's insulation to prevent the cold surface where condensation forms is the most effective long-term investment. Since this is a recurring issue, a science-driven company with its own microbiology lab can verify the mold species and confirm the remediation's success with post-clearance testing.
