Is AC leak mold urgent for my health?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a little onto the carpet for a couple of weeks, and now I’m seeing a few small black spots near the wall. My throat has been feeling scratchy in the mornings and I’m starting to get worried. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or is it something I can clean myself?

A persistent AC leak with visible black spots and throat irritation requires immediate attention. In Dubai's climate, where high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for mold, this situation can escalate quickly. The scratchy throat is a common reaction to mold spores, and the leak provides continuous moisture for growth.

Do not attempt to clean this yourself. Disturbing the mold without proper containment can aerosolize spores and spread them throughout your bedroom. Over-the-counter sprays often fail to address the root cause—the ongoing moisture problem—and the mold will likely return.

The urgency lies in identifying the mold type and the leak's source. Some species commonly found in AC systems, like Cladosporium or Aspergillus, can cause persistent allergic and respiratory symptoms. A professional inspection will assess the extent of growth inside the unit and ductwork, which isn't visible to you, and pinpoint the repair needed to stop the leak. They should use containment procedures and provide verification, such as before-and-after lab testing, to confirm the environment is safe. For health symptoms, consulting a doctor is also advisable.
