Safely cleaning black mold behind furniture myself?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks and their allergies are going crazy. I finally pulled out their wooden toy chest from the corner of their bedroom in our Jumeirah villa and found a patch of black mold on the wall behind it. We had that heavy fog a few weeks ago and I think the humidity got trapped there. What’s the safest way to clean this myself without risking my family’s health?

First, get everyone out of the room and keep the door closed. Ventilate the area by opening a window if possible. For a small patch (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety goggles to avoid inhaling spores or getting them on your skin.

Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water. Avoid bleach; it only removes the colour and can push moisture deeper into the wall, making the problem return faster. Vinegar kills the mould more effectively. Scrub the area gently with a stiff brush, then wipe it down with a damp cloth. Dry the wall completely immediately after with a fan or a dehumidifier.

In Dubai's climate, especially after heavy humidity, the real issue is the moisture trapped in the wall. Simply cleaning the surface mould will almost certainly not be enough if the wall itself is damp. You must identify and fix the source of moisture—likely condensation from the AC or external humidity seeping in.

Given that this is in a child's bedroom and has already affected their health, a professional inspection is strongly advised. The mould you see is often just the surface manifestation; the root system can penetrate deeper. An inspector can use a moisture meter to check the wall's drying potential and recommend if further remediation is needed to ensure it doesn't return. For health-sensitive cases, lab testing of the mould type can also provide clarity on the specific risk.
