Found black mold causing coughs; remove myself or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and we can't figure out why. I finally pulled our sofa away from the wall in our Deira apartment and found a huge patch of black mold spreading behind it, probably from a hidden AC leak. It's been humid for ages and I'm really worried their cough is because of this. What's the safest and most effective way to get rid of this ourselves, or should I just call a professional company right away?

Given the size of the infestation and the clear health symptoms, calling a professional remediation company is strongly advised. A large patch of black mold indicates a significant moisture issue, likely from that AC leak, and improper handling can aerosolize spores, potentially worsening the coughs.
For any visible mold over 1 square meter (approx. 10 sq ft), Dubai Municipality guidelines recommend certified professional remediation. This is especially critical with health symptoms present and when the source is an HVAC system, as spores can spread throughout the apartment. Professionals will contain the area, use HEPA filtration to capture spores, and address the root cause—the AC leak—to prevent immediate recurrence. They can also provide post-remediation verification to confirm the environment is safe. If you absolutely must handle a very small area yourself before a pro arrives, safety is paramount. Isolate the area from the rest of the home and ensure excellent ventilation. Wear a well-fitted N95 mask, goggles, and gloves. Scrub with a detergent solution, but avoid bleach; it is mostly water and can feed future mold growth while failing to address porous materials. However, given the described size and the hidden AC leak, a DIY approach is not the safest or most effective solution. The priority is to stop the moisture source, which requires an AC technician, and then properly remediate the affected building materials. |
