How to permanently remove black mold in humid Dubai home?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold that keeps coming back in the corners of our master bedroom. We live in a villa in Jumeirah and even after I scrub it away with bleach, it reappears within a couple of weeks, especially since the weather got more humid. What is the most effective long-term solution to kill it for good and prevent it from coming back in our Dubai home?

Black mold recurrence after cleaning with bleach indicates a persistent moisture source that needs to be addressed. Bleach only removes surface discoloration but does not kill the root structure of the mold, nor does it address the underlying humidity problem causing its growth.

In Dubai's humid climate, especially in coastal areas like Jumeirah, this is often due to condensation forming on cold surfaces. The most common culprits are uninsulated external walls behind furniture or AC supply vents that create a cold spot. The long-term solution is to find and eliminate this moisture source. Improve air circulation in the room by moving furniture away from walls and ensuring your AC is functioning correctly, with no blocked ducts. A dehumidifier can help, but it's a temporary measure.

For a permanent fix, a professional inspection is recommended. They use thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint the exact location and cause of the condensation—often a thermal bridge in the wall or an AC issue. Remediation then involves correcting the structural or mechanical fault, properly cleaning the mold with specialized antimicrobial agents, and applying anti-microbial coatings to prevent regrowth. Scrubbing it yourself can aerosolize spores, potentially worsening your family's cough. Given the health symptoms, a lab test to identify the mold species can also clarify the risk level.
