Can I treat black mold myself or hire a pro in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, probably from a slow AC leak. It’s about the size of a dinner plate and the wall feels damp. Is this something I can treat myself with bleach, or should I call a professional company for a proper assessment, and what would that likely cost in Dubai?

A dinner plate-sized patch with dampness indicates an active moisture source, which is common in Dubai's climate due to high humidity and AC condensation issues. For a patch that size and given the wall is damp, a DIY approach is often insufficient.

While bleach can remove surface discoloration, it doesn't address the moisture source or kill the mold roots penetrating porous materials like drywall. The dampness suggests the problem is inside the wall cavity, which you cannot treat yourself. The primary step is to stop the AC leak and dry the area completely; without this, the mold will return quickly.

Professional assessment is recommended here. A proper inspection identifies the exact moisture source, assesses the extent of growth inside the wall, and determines the mold species, as some types common in humid climates require specific protocols. Reputable companies use moisture meters and thermal imaging to see inside walls without unnecessary damage. They then provide a scope of work for remediation, which involves containment, removal of affected materials, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment.

Costs for professional remediation in Dubai vary significantly based on the extent of the damage and whether wall removal is needed. For a contained area like a closet, it is generally more affordable than a full-room treatment. Always request a detailed assessment and quote that includes post-remediation verification to ensure the issue is fully resolved.
