Should I remove bathroom mold myself or call maintenance?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold growing in the corner where the shower wall meets the ceiling in our Marina apartment. It's been really humid lately and I think the ventilation isn't great. What's the best way to handle this myself, or should I just call my building's maintenance immediately?

For a small patch (under one square foot) in a Marina apartment, DIY removal is often manageable. The high humidity we're experiencing accelerates growth in bathrooms with poor ventilation.

Start by mixing a solution of one part distilled white vinegar with one part water in a spray bottle. Spray the area thoroughly, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff-bristled brush. Wear an N95 mask and gloves during the process. Avoid using bleach, as it only removes the surface colour and does not address the root moisture problem.

After cleaning, the most critical step is to run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and ensure it is actually moving air. Wiping down wet walls and tiles with a squeegee also helps significantly. A small dehumidifier can be effective in combating the persistent humidity.

If the mold covers a larger area, has penetrated behind the silicone sealant, or returns quickly after cleaning, it's time to call your building's maintenance. This indicates a deeper issue, potentially within the ceiling void or wall cavity, which requires professional assessment and remediation to prevent structural damage and health risks. They can also verify the exhaust fan is functioning to the required Dubai Municipality standards for adequate air extraction.
