How to permanently remove mold from bedroom ceiling?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold that keeps coming back on the ceiling in our master bedroom closet. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, but it’s spreading along the corner where the wall meets the ceiling. I’ve tried wiping it off with vinegar, but it comes back within a couple of weeks. What’s the most effective long-term solution to kill the mold at its source and prevent it from returning in our humid climate?

The mold returning after cleaning with vinegar indicates a persistent moisture source, which is common in Dubai's humid climate. Vinegar only addresses surface growth, not the root cause.

Your first step is identifying the moisture source. In a closet ceiling, this is often condensation from an AC duct running in the void above. The cold air inside the duct causes water vapor in the humid air to condense on the outside of the ductwork, which then drips onto your ceiling. Poor ventilation in the closet exacerbates the problem.

A permanent fix requires a professional inspection to pinpoint the exact cause. They will assess the AC duct insulation, check for leaks from pipes or the roof, and measure humidity levels. The solution often involves sealing and insulating the AC supply duct, improving air circulation in the closet by installing a vent or leaving the door ajar, and addressing any external water intrusion.

For the existing mold, simply wiping it is insufficient. The porous ceiling material (gypsum board) likely has mold roots (hyphae) growing within it. Effective remediation involves removing the affected section or using specialized antimicrobial treatments to penetrate and neutralize the growth at its source.

After fixing the moisture issue, repaint the area with a premium mold-inhibiting primer and paint to help prevent future recurrence. Given the persistent coughing symptoms, a professional assessment is strongly recommended to identify the mold species and ensure the remediation process is handled safely to avoid spreading spores.
