How to treat closet mold in humid UAE climate?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall of our villa in Al Barsha has started getting these black speckles on the leather bags and shoes I stored there. We had that really humid spell a couple of weeks back and even though I run the AC, that corner always feels damp. What’s the best way to treat this and are there any specific dehumidifiers or moisture absorbers that work well in our UAE climate to stop it from coming back?

Move the affected items immediately to a dry, well-ventilated area to prevent further contamination. For leather goods, wipe them down with a solution of equal parts water and 70% isopropyl alcohol, which is effective and less damaging than bleach. Allow them to dry completely in the air, not in direct sunlight.

The closet itself needs a thorough cleaning. Wear a mask and gloves. Scrub the walls and shelves with a mixture of detergent and water. For persistent mold, a diluted vinegar solution can be effective. Let the area dry completely before returning any items. This is a surface-level fix; the underlying moisture issue must be addressed.

Your description points to a classic case of condensation due to thermal bridging. The villa's outside wall in Al Barsha is heated by the sun, while the interior closet space is cooled by AC. This temperature difference causes moisture in the air to condense on the colder interior surfaces, creating the dampness you feel. Simply running the AC is not enough to dry this specific, poorly ventilated corner.

To manage this, improve air circulation. Leave the closet doors open as often as possible and consider installing a small battery-operated fan inside to keep air moving. For moisture control, a compact, electric desiccant dehumidifier is far more effective in our high-heat climate than disposable moisture absorber boxes, which saturate too quickly here. Place it inside the closet.

For a permanent solution, the wall should be inspected for possible insulation issues. If the problem persists or you see extensive regrowth, a professional inspection is recommended to assess for hidden moisture within the wall cavity and identify the mold species, as some can cause more significant damage to property.
