How to remove closet mold in humid Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in my Jumeirah apartment has started getting these black spots on the leather shoes and bags I stored in there, and there's a really damp, earthy smell every time I open the door. I noticed it getting worse after the humidity spiked last month. I run the AC constantly, but it doesn't seem to help this one corner. What's the best way to deal with this and stop it from ruining my stuff, especially with another humid season coming up?

That damp smell and black spots are classic signs of a mold problem, made worse by Dubai's high humidity. Your constantly running AC can actually contribute by creating a cold spot in that closet, leading to condensation when humid air enters.

First, address the items. For leather goods, wipe them down with a dilute vinegar or rubbing alcohol solution and dry them completely away from the closet. Discard or professionally clean any porous items like cardboard boxes that show growth.

To clean the closet, empty it completely. Wear a mask and gloves. Scrub the walls and shelves with a mixture of water and white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning solution. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the surface color and doesn't kill the roots. After cleaning, ensure everything is bone-dry before putting items back.

The real solution is controlling moisture. That closet likely has poor air circulation. Leave the door open as much as possible and consider using a small renewable desiccant like silica gel packs inside. For the upcoming humid season, a standalone dehumidifier in the room can make a significant difference where AC alone fails.

If the mold covers an area larger than a square meter, returns quickly after cleaning, or if you experience health symptoms, a professional inspection is recommended. They can identify the species and source, which is critical as some types common in villas here can be more problematic. In many cases, the issue is a hidden condensation point or a slight leak that needs to be addressed to prevent recurrence.
