Urgent: black mold removal or DIY this weekend?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's because of the black mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from all the humidity lately. How urgent is this? Should I be calling a professional mold removal company in Dubai tonight, or is it something I can handle myself this weekend?

Black mold behind furniture, especially with your kids coughing, warrants immediate attention. Given Dubai's high humidity and the fact it's been growing unseen for some time, this is a health risk you should address professionally.

The urgency isn't necessarily a middle-of-the-night call, but you should get a professional inspection and air quality test scheduled immediately. The primary risk is the spores becoming airborne and being inhaled, which can cause the respiratory irritation you're seeing. A proper inspection will determine the extent of the growth inside the wall cavity, which you can't assess yourself. For a case of this size and with health symptoms present, DIY is not recommended. Scrubbing visible mold can aerosolize a high concentration of spores throughout your home, potentially making the situation worse.

In Dubai, remediation follows standards like the IICRC S520. A certified company will set up containment barriers, use HEPA-filtered negative air machines to prevent cross-contamination, safely remove the affected materials, and treat the area with antimicrobial solutions. The most critical step is identifying and fixing the moisture source—likely condensation from your AC unit or a slow plumbing leak—or the mold will return.

Until the pros arrive, restrict access to the room and avoid disturbing the area. Keep the AC running on a dry mode setting to help lower the indoor humidity, which is a key driver of mold growth here.
