Black mold in bathroom: DIY clean or professional remediation?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived in our Jumeirah Village Triangle villa for two years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the grout in our master bathroom. It's mostly in the corner by the shower where there's less ventilation, and it's definitely spreading. I'm worried it's more than just surface level and might be behind the tiles. Should I just try to clean it myself with bleach, or is this something where I need to get a professional mold remediation company in, and what kind of cost am I looking at for a bathroom here in Dubai?

Black mold in bathrooms is common here due to Dubai's high humidity and condensation from showers. If it's a small, surface-level area confined to the grout lines, a thorough DIY cleaning can be effective. Use a dedicated grout cleaner or a paste of baking soda and vinegar, scrub vigorously, and ensure the area is completely dry afterward. Improving ventilation by running the exhaust fan longer or using a dehumidifier is critical to prevent immediate regrowth.
However, given your description that it's spreading and located in a poorly ventilated corner, there's a significant chance the moisture has penetrated behind the tiles. This is a common issue in villas where the waterproofing membrane may have been compromised. Bleach only removes surface discoloration and does not address the root moisture problem or kill the mold's structure below the surface. For persistent or spreading black spots, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the wall's condition behind the tiles. If the mold is subsurface, DIY cleaning is ineffective and full remediation—involving tile removal, addressing the moisture source, and replacing damaged materials—is necessary. The cost for professional remediation varies significantly based on the bathroom's size and the extent of the damage, so it's best to request a detailed assessment from a certified provider. Look for companies that provide before-and-after lab testing to verify the results, as this is your proof of a job done correctly. |
