Is black mold urgent to treat and move rooms?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. It's been humid lately and I think it's been growing there for a while, but we only spotted it when we moved the furniture to clean. How urgent is it to get this professionally treated, and should we be sleeping in another room right away?

Black mold requires immediate attention, especially with children experiencing symptoms. The urgency is high. Yes, you should sleep in another room until the situation is assessed and contained. The coughing is a strong indicator that mold spores are in the air, and continued exposure will likely prolong or worsen respiratory irritation.

In Dubai's climate, high humidity and constant AC use create perfect conditions for mold behind furniture, inside closets, and on cold walls where condensation forms. This hidden growth is very common. The mold you see is just the fruiting body; the root structure (hyphae) is likely deeper within the wall or material.

Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach or simple sprays. Disturbing it without proper containment will aerosolize a large number of spores, spreading the problem throughout your home and increasing exposure. Professional inspection is critical to determine the extent of the infestation, identify the species, and develop a proper remediation plan. A reputable inspector will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the moisture source and the full affected area.

Remediation involves isolating the area with physical barriers and negative air pressure, safely removing contaminated materials, HEPA vacuuming, and applying antimicrobial treatments. The underlying moisture issue—often condensation from AC or a small leak—must be fixed permanently, or the mold will return quickly. For verification, post-remediation testing confirms the air quality has returned to a safe baseline.
