Is black mold in my shower urgent to treat?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment for two years and just noticed a patch of black mold growing in the corner where the shower wall meets the ceiling. It's been incredibly humid lately and the bathroom's small window doesn't seem to be enough to ventilate it properly. Given the health risks I keep hearing about, how urgent is it that I get a professional to handle this, or is it something I can safely clean myself this weekend?

Black mold in a shower is common in Dubai's climate due to high humidity and condensation, but it should be addressed promptly. The urgency depends on the size and your household's health.
For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub with a dedicated mold removal product or a solution of white vinegar or diluted bleach. The key is fixing the moisture source. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and keep the small window open as much as possible to improve air circulation. A squeegee on the walls after showering can also help reduce moisture. Professional assessment is recommended if the area is large, if the mold returns quickly after cleaning, or if anyone in your home has asthma, allergies, or a compromised immune system. Persistent mold, especially on the ceiling, can indicate a deeper moisture issue within the building structure or from a leaking pipe above, which DIY cleaning won't solve. In such cases, a certified inspector can identify the source and extent to ensure proper remediation. |
