Can I remove small black mold myself or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some boxes. It's been worse since the weather got more humid. I'm worried about my family's health and the cost. For a small area like this in a Dubai Marina apartment, is it something I can handle myself with a cleaner from ACE, or should I definitely call a professional company for a proper assessment and removal?

It depends on the size and cause. For a patch smaller than one square meter, caused by temporary condensation, DIY is often possible. Dubai's high humidity, especially during summer and in AC-cooled apartments like those in Dubai Marina, creates perfect conditions for this.
Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Isolate the area and use a dedicated mold cleaner or a solution of diluted white vinegar. Scrub the area thoroughly and ensure it is completely dry. Discard any porous materials like cardboard boxes that were in direct contact with the mold. However, professional assessment is recommended if the mold returns quickly after cleaning, if the patch is larger than one square meter, or if you notice a persistent musty odor. This indicates a hidden moisture source, like a small leak in the AC drain line or seepage through the external wall, which must be fixed first. Improper removal can disturb spores and spread them further. A proper inspection identifies the root cause to prevent recurrence. |
