Urgent black mold in bathroom or use bleach?« Back to Previous Page
|
My bathroom has had this musty smell for weeks, but I just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading in the grout between the tiles behind the toilet. We've lived in our Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and this is the first time it's been this bad. Given how humid it's been lately, is this something I need to get a professional to handle urgently this week, or can I just hit it with bleach and call it good for now?

Black spots in bathroom grout are often Cladosporium or Aspergillus, common in Dubai due to high humidity and condensation from AC use. Bleach can remove the visible stain on non-porous surfaces like tiles but often fails to kill the root structure of the mold penetrating the porous grout. The musty smell indicates active growth, and bleach will not address the underlying moisture problem.
For a small, isolated patch, a thorough scrub with a dedicated mold-killing cleaner (not just bleach) can be a temporary measure. However, the spread you describe behind the toilet, combined with the persistent odor, suggests a more established colony. In many Dubai apartments, this can be a sign of inadequate ventilation or a hidden moisture issue, like a tiny leak from the toilet seal or condensation from the AC drain line. Given the extent, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the moisture source and assess the mold's penetration. They can determine if remediation is needed or if improved ventilation will suffice. DIY attempts on significant growth can inadvertently release spores into other rooms. For verification, a lab test can identify the species, which is important for anyone with respiratory sensitivities. |
