Found black mold behind wardrobe, remove myself or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month, especially at night, and we can't figure out why. I finally pulled their wardrobe away from the wall in our Deira apartment and found a huge patch of black mold spreading behind it, probably from a slow leak I never noticed. It smells really damp and earthy. What's the safest and most effective way to get rid of this ourselves, or should I just call a professional company right away?

Given the size of the patch and the persistent health symptoms, calling a professional is strongly recommended. The damp, earthy smell indicates active microbial growth, and improper handling can aerosolize spores, potentially worsening your children's respiratory issues.
For a small area (under one square meter), you could attempt containment and cleaning. Isolate the room, wear an N95 mask and gloves, and use a solution of detergent and water to scrub the mould off non-porous surfaces. However, porous materials like drywall or the back of the wardrobe often need cutting out and replacement, as mould roots deeply penetrate. Simply spraying bleach is ineffective and can release harmful fumes in a confined space. The underlying cause is critical. In Dubai's climate, this is almost certainly due to condensation from your AC unit's cold surface meeting humid air or a hidden plumbing leak. A pro will use a moisture meter to find the exact source and ensure it's fixed; otherwise, the mould will return within weeks. They also follow protocols to contain the spores during removal, preventing cross-contamination. Professional remediation is particularly advised here due to the health impact, the hidden nature of the leak, and the likelihood of structural material damage. Look for a company that provides a clear scope of work, uses containment barriers, and—most importantly—can verify the results with post-remediation testing from an independent lab to ensure the air quality is safe. |
