How to treat and prevent recurring damp mold?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably because we moved the furniture during deep cleaning. The wall feels a bit damp and we’re in a Jumeirah villa that’s a bit older. What’s the best way to treat this ourselves to make sure it doesn’t come back?

Black mold growth behind furniture is common in older Dubai villas, especially in humid areas like Jumeirah. The damp wall suggests a moisture issue, which must be resolved first. For a small area (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself with a vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution—never bleach, as it only removes the color and can worsen spores. Scrub gently, dry the area completely, and discard any porous materials like damaged wallpaper.

However, treating visible mold doesn't address the underlying cause or potential hidden growth. The dampness is likely due to condensation from AC temperature differences, a minor plumbing leak in the wall, or external moisture seepage common in older construction. To prevent recurrence, improve airflow by keeping furniture slightly away from walls, use a dehumidifier, and ensure your AC is serviced and draining properly.

Given the symptoms your children are experiencing, DIY cleaning is a temporary measure. Mold can release spores during cleaning, potentially aggravating coughs. For health concerns and recurring dampness, a professional inspection is advised to identify the moisture source and assess for hidden mold inside walls. Companies with their own microbiology labs can provide species identification to confirm if the mold type is linked to respiratory issues. Dubai Municipality has clear guidelines on dampness and mold in residences, and a proper assessment will determine if remediation is needed.
