How to stop mold in humid closet?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa has started to smell really damp, especially since the weather got more humid last month. I pulled out my winter jackets today and found a bunch of small black spots on a leather bag and some wool sweaters stored at the back. We run the AC constantly but it seems to be creating a problem in this one enclosed space. What's the best way to control the humidity in a walk-in closet to stop this mold from coming back?

Enclosed spaces like closets in Dubai are prime spots for mold because the AC's dehumidifying effect doesn't circulate well there, creating a pocket of trapped humid air. The constant cycling between cool interior and extreme outdoor heat promotes condensation, which the stored organic materials (like leather, wool, and cotton) then absorb.
First, address the immediate problem. Remove all affected items. For porous materials like clothing, a thorough wash or professional dry cleaning can remove mold. For leather, wipe with a diluted vinegar or alcohol solution and allow it to dry completely away from sunlight. The closet itself needs to be cleaned with a microbial cleaner designed to break down mold spores, not just bleach which removes the color but not the root structure. To stop it from coming back, you must control the humidity. The most effective solution is to improve air circulation. Leave the closet doors open for a few hours each day if possible. For a walk-in closet, a small, standalone dehumidifier can make a significant difference; empty it daily. Alternatively, installing a louvered door replaces the solid one, allowing air to move in and out while still being closed. Ensure your villa's AC system is serviced and that the condensate drain line is not clogged, as a malfunctioning unit can contribute to higher indoor humidity. For a persistent issue, a professional inspection can identify if there's a hidden leak in the plumbing or building envelope or if the AC duct servicing that room has an imbalance. They can also take air samples to identify the mold type, which dictates the remediation approach. |
