Safely clean black mold behind wardrobe for kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing at night and I’m worried it’s because of the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in their bedroom. We’ve lived in our Jumeirah villa for two years and this is the first time I’ve seen it, especially after the recent humidity. What’s the safest way to clean this myself without making their cough worse?

Black mould behind furniture is common in Dubai's humid climate, especially after recent weather. The condensation against exterior walls creates a perfect environment for growth. Your children's nighttime coughing could certainly be related, as mould spores are a known respiratory irritant.
For a small area, you can clean it yourself safely. First, keep the children out of the room during the process. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water—avoid bleach as it can irritate lungs and often doesn't kill the root structure. Scrub the area gently to avoid aerosolizing spores, then dry it thoroughly with a fan. However, cleaning the surface may not address the hidden moisture source within the wall. The mould will likely return without proper drying and ventilation. Given this is in a child's bedroom and respiratory symptoms are already present, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the condensation source and can take an air or surface sample for lab analysis to confirm the mould type. This identifies the actual risk level and ensures the remediation is complete. |
