How to remove and prevent mold on my living room wall?« Back to Previous Page
|
The wall behind our sofa in the living room has started showing these black spots, and I’m sure it’s mold. We live in a ground-floor apartment in Jumeirah, and I noticed it getting worse after the heavy humidity last week. We run the AC constantly, but it seems to be spreading. What’s the most effective way to clean this and stop it from coming back for good?

First, move the sofa away from the wall to allow air circulation and assess the full extent. For a small area, a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 4 parts water) can be effective. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area thoroughly, but be aware this only addresses surface mold you can see.
In Dubai's climate, especially in ground-floor apartments in areas like Jumeirah, the root cause is almost always excess moisture. The heavy humidity creates condensation, particularly on exterior walls where cold AC meets warm, humid air. Simply cleaning the spot will not stop it from returning. To prevent recurrence, you must control the humidity and improve ventilation. Ensure your AC unit is not set excessively cold, as this increases condensation. Use a dehumidifier in the room, especially during humid periods. Wipe down walls where condensation forms regularly. Most importantly, improve air movement behind the sofa; even a small gap can make a significant difference. For persistent or recurring mold, a professional inspection is recommended to identify hidden moisture sources within the wall cavity. They can perform a moisture mapping assessment to find the exact problem. In many cases, the only permanent solution involves addressing the underlying dampness, which may require coordination with your building management. |
