How to remove mold from closet wall myself?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind all the clothes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and it’s gotten way worse since that heavy dew we had last week. What’s the best way to get rid of this mold for good without having to call in a professional straight away?

That black mold in your closet is a classic Dubai issue, made worse by the recent humidity. The wall facing outside is likely a cold bridge, where warm, humid air condenses, creating the perfect damp environment for mold to grow behind your clothes.
For a small area (less than one square meter), you can attempt to manage it yourself. Start by moving all clothing and items out of the closet. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses to avoid inhaling spores or getting them on your skin. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to three parts water or a teaspoon of baking soda in a spray bottle of water. Avoid bleach; it only removes the colour and can push the mold deeper into porous surfaces like drywall. Spray the area, let it sit for 15 minutes, then scrub with a stiff brush. Wipe clean with a damp cloth and dry the area thoroughly immediately after. The critical step is to run a dehumidifier in that room for several days and identify the moisture source. In many villas and older buildings, this is inadequate external wall insulation leading to condensation. Without fixing this, the mold will return. If the staining is extensive, has penetrated deeply, or comes back quickly after cleaning, the underlying issue is beyond a surface fix. At that point, a professional inspection with moisture meters and possibly thermal imaging is needed to identify the root cause for a permanent solution. |
