Could this hidden mold cause our constant coughs and headaches?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and I'm starting to panic. I just pulled back the corner of the carpet in our master bedroom where it meets the wall and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold, probably from a slow AC leak we never noticed. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this. Could this mold be the reason for our constant sore throats and headaches?

Yes, the mold you found could absolutely be the cause of your family's persistent coughs, sore throats, and headaches. In Dubai's climate, where we rely on year-round air conditioning, hidden condensation leaks are a primary cause of this issue. The continuous moisture from a slow AC leak creates an ideal environment for mold to thrive behind walls and under carpets.

The symptoms you describe—non-stop coughing, headaches, and throat irritation—are very common reactions to inhaling mold spores released into your home's air. This is especially concerning for children, who are more vulnerable to these irritants. You should treat this as a serious indoor air quality issue that requires immediate action.

Do not attempt to clean this yourself. Disturbing a large patch of mold will release a massive amount of spores, potentially making the situation much worse. Your first step is to stop the moisture source; have an AC technician inspect and repair the suspected leak immediately.

For a case of this size and with health symptoms already present, a professional mold inspection is strongly recommended. They can assess the full extent of the growth, which is likely more widespread than what's visible. Reputable inspectors in Dubai will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find hidden dampness and can take air and surface samples for lab analysis to identify the mold species and spore concentration in your air. This evidence-based approach is crucial for guiding an effective remediation plan and for verifying that the environment is safe for your family after cleanup.
