How to permanently remove black mold from shower sealant?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment has had this musty smell for weeks, but I finally pulled back the silicone sealant around the shower and found a ton of black mold growing underneath. It’s been really humid lately and the bathroom window is tiny, so ventilation is terrible. What’s the most effective way to kill this mold for good and prevent it from coming back in our climate?

Black mold under silicone sealant is common in Dubai bathrooms due to high humidity and poor ventilation. The most effective permanent removal requires addressing both the visible growth and the underlying moisture issue.

First, the compromised sealant itself must be completely removed. Scraping or killing surface mold is insufficient, as the fungus penetrates deep into the porous material. Use a utility knife to cut out all affected silicone. Dispose of it sealed in a bag to prevent spreading spores.

Thoroughly clean the exposed area with a dedicated mold remover, not just bleach, which often fails to kill the root structure. Let the area dry completely for at least 24-48 hours, using a dehumidifier or fan to accelerate drying in our humid climate.

For permanent prevention, the core issue is ventilation. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower. If you lack a fan, install one. Keep the bathroom door open and the window ajar when possible to reduce condensation. Wiping down wet surfaces after use is highly effective.

When reapplying sealant, use a high-quality, mold-resistant silicone product. Ensure the joint is completely dry and clean before application for a perfect seal.

If the mold covers a large area (generally more than one square meter), has caused persistent health symptoms, or if you discover it has spread behind tiles or walls, a professional inspection is recommended. In such cases, lab testing can identify the species to confirm the risk level and ensure the remediation plan is appropriate for the infestation scale.
