How to remove mold behind toilet tank permanently?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment has had this musty smell for weeks, but I finally found the source behind the toilet tank. There’s a patch of black and green mold spreading on the wall, and it feels damp to the touch. With the humidity lately, it seems to be getting worse. What’s the most effective way to kill and remove this mold for good, and should I be calling my building management to handle it, or is this something I can fix myself?

The damp patch behind your toilet tank is a common issue in Dubai apartments, particularly in high-humidity areas like JVC. The constant condensation from your AC and the toilet's cold water tank creates a perfect environment for mold.

First, notify your building management. Under Dubai Municipality regulations, they are responsible for the building's structural integrity and fixing the underlying cause, which is likely a hidden leak in the water supply line or a crack in the wall allowing moisture to seep through. Simply cleaning the mold without fixing the leak will guarantee its return.

For immediate, safe removal, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the visible area with a dedicated mold cleaner or a solution of white vinegar and water. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the surface color and does not kill the root structure. Dry the area completely with a fan after cleaning.

However, if the mold patch is larger than one square meter, has penetrated deeply into the drywall, or returns quickly after cleaning, a professional inspection is strongly advised. In many cases, the wall cavity behind the toilet needs to be opened to dry properly and assess the full extent. A certified inspector can use a moisture meter to identify the exact source of the water intrusion and recommend the correct remediation protocol to prevent recurrence.
