How to inspect mold behind wardrobe in humid Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black spots growing behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and with all the humidity lately in Dubai, it seems to be getting worse. I'm worried it's spreading inside the wall. What's the first step I should take for a proper mold inspection here?

First, move the wardrobe away from the wall to fully expose the affected area. Do not attempt to scrub or spray the mold yourself, as this can disturb spores and spread them further into the air. The high humidity we've been experiencing creates a perfect environment for mold to thrive, especially on exterior walls where condensation can form.

Given that you suspect it's spreading inside the wall, a visual inspection is only the first step. The most reliable method is professional mold inspection, which involves moisture meters to detect dampness within the wall cavity and, if necessary, air and surface sampling. These samples are then analyzed by an accredited microbiology lab to identify the specific mold species and its concentration. This is critical in the UAE, as some species common to our climate can be more problematic than others.

This diagnostic approach is essential because it determines the correct remediation strategy. A proper inspection will provide a clear picture of the contamination's extent and the underlying moisture source, which is often a small leak or inadequate insulation on an exterior wall. Without addressing that source, the mold will simply return. For a situation like this with suspected hidden growth, a professional assessment is strongly recommended to ensure it is handled safely and effectively.
