Black mold in bathroom grout: DIY or professional help?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom in Jumeirah has been getting these black spots for the last couple of months, and no matter how much I scrub with bleach, it keeps coming back. I’m worried it’s spreading behind the vanity. Is this something I can handle myself with a product from ACE Hardware, or should I just call a professional for a proper assessment and treatment? What’s the typical cost range for a professional mold remediation job for a single bathroom here in Dubai?

Black spots in bathroom grout are almost always mold, and its persistent return after bleaching is a classic sign in Dubai. The high humidity and constant condensation from showers create an ideal environment for it to thrive. Bleach only removes surface discoloration; it doesn't kill the root system (hyphae) penetrating the porous grout.

For a small, surface-level patch, a dedicated fungicidal cleaner from a hardware store can be more effective than bleach. However, if it has been recurring for months and you suspect it has spread behind fixtures like the vanity, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. Mold behind walls or under vanities often indicates a larger moisture issue that a surface cleaner cannot address. In such cases, the underlying cause, such as a tiny pipe leak or insufficient ventilation, must be identified and rectified to prevent regrowth.

Professional remediation cost is not fixed; it depends entirely on the extent of the infestation. A simple grout cleaning and sealant application for a single bathroom is a more minor service. However, if removal of tiles, vanity, or sections of drywall is required to access and treat the root colony, the scope and cost increase accordingly. The only way to get an accurate understanding of the required work and associated investment is to request an on-site inspection and detailed quote.
