How urgent is mold removal for my coughing kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this, but it's been really humid lately. How urgently do I need to get this mold removed, and should we sleep in another room until it's fixed?

Given the symptoms and visible growth, this situation warrants immediate attention. With young children coughing, the priority is to limit their exposure. Move them to another room to sleep tonight, especially since bedrooms have prolonged, close-quarters exposure.

In Dubai's high humidity, mold can colonize a wall cavity behind furniture in under 72 hours. The black spots suggest active growth, and its location against an exterior wall is a classic sign of condensation from the temperature differential between the air-conditioned room and the outside heat. This is not just surface dust; it's a moisture problem.

For a case involving respiratory symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They can use a moisture meter to find the source of the dampness—often a small leak from an AC condensate drain pipe or capillary cracks in the wall—and a borescope to see the extent of growth inside the wall. DIY cleaning often just disturbs the spores, potentially making the airborne particle count worse. Remediation should include fixing the moisture source, proper containment of the area during removal, and HEPA vacuuming to clear spores.

Until it's assessed, keep the bedroom door closed, the AC fan running to help filter the air, and increase ventilation in the rest of the home. The urgency is high to diagnose and remediate for your children's health.
