DIY or professional for Jumeirah villa mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It seems to have spread a bit, maybe from the last time we ran the AC heavily during the summer. I'm worried about my family breathing it in, but I have no idea what this costs to fix here. For a small area like this in a Jumeirah villa, should I attempt a DIY solution or is it worth hiring a professional mold removal company?

For a small, visible patch like this, DIY is possible if the area is less than one square meter and confined to a non-porous surface like tile or painted drywall. However, the location behind boxes in a closet is a major red flag; it suggests a persistent moisture source you haven't identified yet. In Dubai's climate, this is almost always due to high humidity or condensation from AC systems, which will cause the mold to return unless the root cause is fixed.

Before any cleaning, you must identify and stop the moisture source. Check for a nearby AC vent causing condensation, a small leak in the wall, or general high humidity in that enclosed space. For DIY, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a detergent solution, not just bleach which only removes surface discoloration. Allow it to dry completely and monitor it closely for any regrowth.

Given this is in a bedroom and you're concerned about family exposure, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. They can use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the hidden moisture source that you likely can't see. For a villa in Jumeirah, the cost to properly remediate a small area is typically not prohibitive compared to the risk of it spreading or affecting health. A reputable company will provide a clear scope of work and, most importantly, a cause-and-correction report to prevent it from happening again. Request a company that offers post-remediation verification to ensure the issue is truly resolved.
